Spring time in the fjords

As the snow begins to melt and waterfalls roar back to life, Geiranger transforms into a lush and vibrant paradise. Spring in this UNESCO World Heritage-listed fjord village is nothing short of magical — a season of contrasts where snow-capped peaks meet blooming meadows and the days grow longer with every sunrise.

Nature Comes Alive

From late April through June, Geiranger slowly shakes off its winter coat. The famous Seven Sisters Waterfall thunders down the steep cliffs, fed by melting snow from the mountains above. Hiking trails re-emerge from the snow.

The air is fresh and clear, with a soft scent of earth and wildflowers. The mountains, still dusted with snow, stand in contrast to the bright green of new grass in the valley below. For nature lovers and photographers, it’s the perfect moment to experience the full range of Geiranger’s dramatic beauty.

Outdoor Adventures Await

Spring is also a fantastic time to explore Geiranger on foot, by kayak, or even on skis. The high mountain roads — like the route to Djupvasshytta — start to open in stages, offering access to fantastic ski touring terrain in May, where you can enjoy sunny descents with fjord views.

Back in the village, the Fossevandring (Waterfall Walk) is a must-do, bringing you up close to the roaring Storfossen that flows past Hotel Union and down to the fjord. Hikes to abandoned mountain farms such as Skageflå are also available as conditions improve.

A Time for Peaceful Exploration

Unlike the busy summer months, spring in Geiranger offers a more peaceful atmosphere. It’s a time for slowing down and enjoying the surroundings — whether that’s sipping coffee on a terrace with a view, soaking in a spa overlooking the fjord, or simply taking a quiet stroll along the water’s edge.

Wildlife is also more active: you may spot eagles soaring overhead, or goats returning to the mountain pastures.

Plan Your Spring Getaway

Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventures, peace and quiet, or a scenic getaway to reconnect with nature, Geiranger in spring is a hidden gem. As the fjord awakens from its winter slumber, it invites you to do the same — to breathe deeply, explore slowly, and take in the wonder of Norway’s natural beauty at its most vibrant.
